Tour overview
Our 4-day Kidepo Valley wildlife safari takes you to one of the remotest, yet most rewarding national parks in Uganda. Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s most distant park, located in the north-eastern region near the border with Kenya and South Sudan. It is one of Africa’s most naturally authentic and least disturbed wildernesses, with the beauty found nowhere else in East Africa. Kidepo encompasses an area of 1,442 square kilometers and has an altitude range of 914m to 2,750m. The park was established in 1962: in 2013, it was voted “Best National Park in Africa for magnificent landscapes and big buffalo herds” by CNN Travel.
Kidepo Valley National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, most of which is not seen in other Ugandan parks. Among these include Ostriches, Pygmy Crocodiles, Cheetahs, and other uncommon cats. The park’s 85 mammals and an estimated 475 bird species make it an amazing and perfect destination for your African safari.
Kidepo Valley National Park features two rivers, Narus and Kidepo, both of which evaporate during the dry season, leaving only small pools of water and wetlands for the park’s diverse species. During the dry season, stroll along the Kidepo River and enjoy its 100m bed of white sand between banks covered in borassus palm trees.
While on your 4-day Kidepo Valley wildlife safari, you will adore breathtaking vistas across the entire park with low valleys surrounded by a continuous ridge of hills and mountain ranges; a clear picture of an African setting, therefore “The True African Wilderness”. You will go on game drives and see species such as Rothschild’s giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, elands, hartebeests, lions, hyenas, and cheetahs, among others. The park also boasts the highest concentration of African buffalos in the world which you will witness. You will also have communal encounters with particular tribes whose traditional beliefs and way of life have been best preserved on our Kidepo Valley National Park Safari. The survival of such communities as the Karamojong and the Ik is jeopardized.
Safari Highlights;
- Full-day game drive in Kidepo
- Visit the Ik people
Day 1: Travel to Kidepo – Stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Pick up from Kampala at 7 a.m. and drive to Kidepo Valley National Park in northern Uganda, a 500-kilometer journey. Enjoy the long journey to North-eastern Uganda enjoying the sights of farmlands and several other landscapes, stopping for lunch in Kitgum. Proceed with your journey to Kidepo Valley National Park. On arrival in the Park, an initial view provides you a ridge-like topography; spreading across a long range, across a long distance till it tends to fade and blur, further integrating with the environment. Check into your lodge and refresh. Overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 2: Full Day Game Drive in Kidepo
After an early breakfast, we will spend the day in the stunning wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park, where we will see a variety of wildlife and incredible vistas. The Narus Valley is home to many species because it is the park's only source of water during the dry season. The northern Kidepo Valley on the other hand is drier than the Narus Valley in the park's south; thus, it has less wildlife. The northern section, on the other hand, contains the greatest concentration of ostriches. Buffaloes, zebras, and waterbucks, among other animals, may be seen.
A variety of birds can also be seen. Kidepo is home to 475 bird species, 58 of which are raptors. The Karamoja Apalis and Cappatal's francolin are indigenous to the park. In the evening, we'll return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Hike up Mount Morungole to visit the Ik People
After an early breakfast, we transfer to the trailhead for the Mount Morungole escapade in Kidepo. Set off on a climb to the mountain, which also serves as a home for the IK tribe, a fascinating tribe of people with a distinct history and culture. Spend time with a hosting IK homestead and learn about their many traditions, customs, and way of life. In the evening, we return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
